Blending Science & Nature

There is no doubt in my mind that two things hold true in the health & wellness industry.  The first is that natural supplementation is the only logical approach to giving the body what it needs in terms of nutrition.  And the second is that science and technology will lead the way in bringing natural supplementation into the 21st century.

The Problems

There are tens of thousands of nutritional supplements available to us in today's market place. This makes it quite difficult for the consumer to select the product that best suits their needs. The truth of the matter is that people spend more time shopping for the clothes they put on their bodies than the nutrients they put into them.

Ladies & Gentlemen there are two kinds of people that consume nutritional supplements. Those who care about what they put into their bodies and those who don't (or at least don't care enough to know what they are ingesting). This may sound a bit harsh however it is the absolute truth.

Let's take a look at "The Big Boy's" on the block. Centrum is the #1 selling vitamin/mineral supplement brand in the country (if not the world). GNC Franchising, Inc. is the world's leading franchisor of specialty vitamin and nutritional supplement stores. What do these two companies have in common (along with hundreds of other manufacturers)?

  • The first thing is their use of potentially dangerous constituents in their products. One such constituent is Titanium Dioxide. Almost every product sold by these companies, and hundreds, if not thousands of others, contain this dangerous element. Click Here to learn more about Titanium Dioxide.  In one of GNC's top selling products Biotab Nutraceuticals Extenze™, for example, you will find Dicalcium phosphate. This element, according to it's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), is "not fit for human consumption". You will also find polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, mica, talc, polysorbate 80,FD&C blue 2 & FD&C red 40, all of which are considered to be potential human carcinogens.

Ladies and Gentlemen are these the things that you would put into your body if you knew they were present in your supplements?

  • The second thing that they share is the poor bio-availability of their products. What is bio-availability? In short bio-availability refers to the amount of an agent that actually reaches the blood stream after the digestion process and is available for use by the body. Many of the supplements sold today are refereed to by medical industry employees as "Bed Pan Bullets". They are called this do to the visible undigested remains of the product often found in fecal waste. What does this mean to you? Study's show that if you are taking a supplement in a "solid pill" form your body is only absorbing 10-20% of that supplement. The rest of it passes through your body through its waste product. This means that you are only getting 10-20% of the nutritional value posted on the product label and that you are throwing 80-90% of your money down the drain (literally speaking).

If you think that this is untrue simply drop a solid pill form of a multivitamin product into a glass of water to see how water soluble is actually is. There have been many reports of supplements, in the solid pill form, that have been found in sewer systems with the names of the products still viable on the remains.  Of what real value are these forms of supplements, even if they are $15.00 a bottle, when you have to take 5 times the dosage to actually get what the label is saying you are getting from one?

The Solution

The solution to this issue is really quite simple. READ THE LABELS!

If you see a complicated name that you cant pronounce or that seems "unnatural" do some research and find out what the element is.

It is important to remember that science does have it's place in this industry. That place is not or should not be creating copy cat nutrition when nature has provided us with everything that we need to keep our bodies healthy.

Science should work hand in hand with nature not try to improve it.
